At the Southwestern Rottweiler Club of San Diego, we offer a variety of activities designed to showcase and enhance the working abilities of Rottweilers. Our members participate in numerous events celebrating this remarkable breed's versatility and capabilities.

Agility

Agility is a fun and challenging activity that tests a dog's speed and accuracy as it navigates an obstacle course. Rottweilers excel in agility due to their intelligence, strength, and willingness to work closely with their handlers. Our agility events strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners while providing excellent physical exercise and mental stimulation.

Barn Hunt

Barn Hunt is an activity that taps into a Rottweiler’s instinct to hunt. In this event, dogs must locate and indicate the presence of rats (safely contained in tubes) hidden in a straw bale maze. This activity is excellent for honing a Rottweiler's scent detection skills and provides a fun and engaging way for dogs to use their noses.

Carting

Carting is a traditional working activity that allows Rottweilers to showcase their strength and endurance. Historically used as draft dogs, Rottweilers are well-suited for pulling carts. Our carting events often involve dogs pulling carts filled with various weights through a designated course, demonstrating their power and training.

Herding

Despite being known primarily as guard dogs, Rottweilers have a strong herding instinct. Our herding events allow Rottweilers to demonstrate their ability to move and control livestock under the guidance of their handlers. This activity highlights the breed's versatility and adaptability in working environments.

Specialty Shows

Our Specialty Shows training program focuses on preparing Rottweilers for competitive events that highlight their conformation, obedience, and overall excellence. In these shows, Rottweilers are judged on their physical attributes, movement, and temperament. This program emphasizes proper handling techniques and presentation skills, ensuring that each dog performs at their best. Specialty shows celebrate the breed's heritage and promote the highest standards of Rottweiler excellence.

Obedience Rally

Obedience rally is essential for Rottweilers, combining basic and advanced training commands with agility exercises for a fun and engaging experience. In these events, dog-handler teams navigate a course with various stations, each requiring a different obedience task. This activity highlights the strong communication and trust between Rottweilers and their handlers, showcasing the dogs' intelligence, precision, and eagerness to work.

Tracking

Tracking events showcase a Rottweiler’s excellent scent detection abilities. In these events, dogs follow a scent trail left by a person over various terrains. Tracking is a practical skill for search and rescue work and a stimulating and rewarding activity for dogs that love to use their noses.

Conformation

Conformation focuses on the Rottweiler's physical appearance and structure, ensuring that they meet the breed standard set by the AKC. These events allow breeders and owners to showcase their dogs and receive evaluations from qualified judges. Conformation shows are essential for preserving the breed's integrity and promoting high standards in breeding practices.

Temperament Tests

Temperament tests are designed to evaluate a Rottweiler's behavior and stability in various situations. These tests are crucial for ensuring that Rottweilers maintain their characteristic courage, loyalty, and confidence. Passing a temperament test is a mark of a well-rounded and reliable dog.

Rattlesnake Aversion Training

In Southern California, rattlesnake encounters can be a real threat to dogs. Our club offers rattlesnake avoidance training to teach Rottweilers to recognize and avoid these dangerous creatures. This training is vital for dogs' safety and provides peace of mind for their owners.

Dogs learn to identify and locate specific scents through structured exercises and real-world scenarios. This program enhances mental stimulation and strengthens the bond between dog and handler, preparing Rottweilers for activities like search and rescue and competitive scent detection.

Therapy

Therapy training transforms Rottweilers into compassionate companions, focusing on developing the temperament and social skills necessary for therapy work. Dogs are trained to remain calm in various environments, offering emotional support in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. This program highlights the breed's ability to provide comfort and joy to those in need.
